Purpose and Aim:
To provide Healthcare Support Workers working at band 4 with the knowledge and skills to use larval therapy.

Learning Outcomes Assessment Criteria
The learner will The learner can
1. Know how to recognise non viable tissue.
1.1 Describe the anatomy and physiology of healthy skin.
1.2  Describe the presentation of non viable tissue.
2. Understand the mechanism of larval therapy.
2.1 Describe the life cycle of the Lucilia Sericata.
2.2  Explain how larvae debride non viable tissue.
3. Know when to obtain support with larval therapy.
3.1 Give examples of situations when support is needed with larval therapy.
3.2  Explain the interventions required to address the complications of larval therapy.
3.3  Identify when and who to contact for support with larval therapy.
4. Be able to use larval therapy.
4.1 Following a care plan apply larval therapy on a minimum of three occasions to include:
  • Confirming the individual's identity
  • Supporting the patient's language preference
  • Answering the patient's questions or referring them to other healthcare professionals for clarification
  • Identifying how to obtain larvae
  • Outlining the procedure to the patient
  • Obtaining consent
  • Respecting the dignity and privacy of the patient
  • Maintaining the comfort of the patient throughout the procedure
  • Maintaining the safety of the patient throughout the procedure
  • Complying with current policies for infection control, record keeping and data protection, safeguarding, health and safety, and manual handling
  • Preparing the environment and equipment
  • Protecting the peri wound skin
  • Preparing the wound bed for debridement
  • Applying and removing larvae
  • Support patients with follow up care and advice
  • Identifying factors that compromise the larval treatment
  • Disposing of larvae
  • Reporting the outcome of larval therapy
