Purpose and Aim:
Developing competence in multi layered Lymphoedema bandaging techniques for the lower limb for registered practitioners

1. Understand how to use multi layered lymphoedema bandaging techniques to manage lymphoedema in the lower limbs.
1.1 Explain the purpose of multi layered lymphoedema bandaging in managing lymphoedema to include:
  • Current research
  • Current best practice guidelines
1.2  Explain the contraindications to using multi layered lymphoedema bandaging in managing lymphoedema.
1.3  Explain how to assess patients with lower limb lymphoedema to include:
  • Taking an oedema history
  • Assessing patients' mobility and support needs
  • Conducting an examination of the limb
  • Identifying skin conditions
  • Assessing circulation in the leg
  • Taking lower limb measurements
  • Calculating the circumference difference based on volumetric measurements
  • 1.4  Explain how to use multi layered bandaging techniques to manage lymphoedema to include:
  • Selecting compression padding and bandages
  • Selecting and using moisturiser and emollients
  • The benefits of toe bandaging
  • The application of undercast padding
  • The application of toe bandages
  • The application of multi layer short stretch bandaging
  • Identifying when to refer to other registered practitioners
  • Identifying the use of prophylaxis for cellulitis
  • 2. Be able to apply multi layered lymphoedema bandaging to manage lymphoedema in lower limbs.
    2.1 Demonstrate how to prepare for an assessment of lymphoedema in lower limbs to include:
    • Explaining the procedure to the patient and obtaining consent
    • Respecting the dignity and privacy of the patient
    • Maintaining the comfort of the patient throughout the procedure
    • Complying with current protocols for infection control, record keeping and data protection, safeguarding, health and safety, and manual handling
    2.2  Perform a lower limb lymphoedema assessment including:
  • Taking an oedema history
  • Making a physical assessment of the limb
  • Justifying the plan of care
  • 2.3  Demonstrate how to apply multi layered lymphoedema lower limb bandage to include:
  • Washing the limb with soap substitute and drying the limb removing loose skin plaques
  • Using moisturisers/emollients
  • Applying protection layer, toe bandaging, padding and multilayered short stretch bandaging
  • Checking limb shape and rigidity
  • Monitoring the circulation in extremities
  • Maintaining records and reporting deterioration to a medical practitioner or registered practitioner
  • 2.4  Give advice to the patient or family/carers about the ongoing management of the condition including information on:
  • Hygiene
  • Podiatry needs
  • Depilation
  • Footwear/clothes
  • Nutrition/hydration
  • Mobility and exercise
  • 2.5  Give advice to the patient or family/carers about minimising complications with multi layer Lymphoedema bandaging
    3. Be able to reflect on personal practice in managing lymphoedema using multi layered lymphoedema bandaging techniques.
    3.1 Evaluate personal practice in using lower limb multi layer lymphoedema bandaging.
    3.2  Create an action plan for ongoing professional development.
