ESDGC
Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship
ESDGC (Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship) is one of the The Welsh Assembly Government’s priorities and is reflected throughout all its policy documents. It is a priority within education and is inspected by Estyn across all sectors, formal and informal, and for all age groups.
Wales has set challenging targets to to establish itself as a leading country in sustainable economic, environmental and social terms.
ESDGC is not just a topic for discussion and teaching, but also an ethos and attitude that the WAG wish to underpin all areas of life in Wales.
ESDGC has been defined as being:
- “about the links between society, economy and environment and between our own lives and those of people throughout the world’;’the needs and rights of both present and future generations’;
- ’the relations between power, resources and human rights’ and ‘local and global implications of everything we do’ (ESDGC: Why? What?How? ACCAC 2002)
“Wales and the wider world” is a focus for WAG and its education policies so that all its citizens are equipped to successfully live in the increasing globalised market and agenda of the 21st century.
ESDGC skills, values and attitudes that WAG promotes through its policies are designed to equip all Wales’ citizens to survive and shape the sustainable and equitable future that is WAGs vision.
