Creating Qualifications, rewarding achievement

14-19 Learning Pathways:Individual Learning Pathways

A Learning Pathway is “the learning experience of each individual 14-19 year old. It consists of a Learning Core  and the choice of options from which the learner selects, with informed support and guidance” (Learning Pathways 14-19 Guidance II, WAG 2006).

The individual learning pathway should allow a learner to undertake the right options for him/her at a range of levels, allowing for recognition of experiences, from all aspects of a learner’s life; thus it may include:Picture of a path

  • formal learning (organised learning leading to approved qualifications or CQFW credit),
  • non formal learning (organised programmes that lead to accreditation outside of NQF/QCF)
  • informal learning (learning normally without accreditation).

With flexibility of delivery, the variety of units available, and the fact that many courses and qualifications can be personalised for individual learners, credit based learning is particularly suited to meeting the requirements of individual learning pathways.

Agored Cymru offers a range of flexible and responsive credit based provision designed to help learners of every age and level achieve their potential. Units and qualifications have been designed to suit the needs and priorities of individuals, communities, employers and national priorities in a modern Wales. Such provision, available across a range of levels and a wide variety of sectors can:

  • Facilitate individual learning plans;
  • Allow achievement in small ‘bite size’ chunks;
  • Provide a wide range of subject areas from preparation for life through to vocational subjects;
  • Allow assessment tailored to meet learner needs.

Some of Agored Cymru’s provision can form part of an individuals “formal” learning provision but much of our provision can be used to recognise informal or non formal learning opportunities thereby meeting specific individual needs and allowing for an individual learning pathway to be provided for.
